How does a fly-in, isolated Northern Ontario community help Syrian refugees? In Peawanuck, community members decided to host a penny and bake sale.
In early December a group of students enrolled in the Canadian Red Cross Personal Support Worker (PSW) course hosted a fundraiser at the Peawanuck community hall. Each of the six students contributed to the fundraiser by donating an item for the penny sale and bringing in baked goods and selling plates of turkey.
Joanne Hunter, one of the students enrolled in the program stated, “It was a good success despite the population of our community.”
Peawanuck is a small community with a population of 200 people. In just two hours the group raised a total of $700.
Felicia Danesi, who is the instructor for the PSW course said, “All the money goes to providing basic necessities like food and clothing. She added, “The funds are ear marked for Syria” and will be used by the Red Cross to help refugees arriving in Toronto.
