Tensions rising over Ring of Fire as direct action threatened

Matawa First Nations’ efforts to slow down the rapid development of the Ring of Fire and advance First Nation input over mining has received support from First Nations across northern Ontario.
Both the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) and Mushkegowuk Council last week released statements of support for Matawa’s stance.
Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Stan Louttit said offers of “small” Impact Benefit Agreements made by industry to affected First Nations are not enough, and that First Nation voices need to be heard when it comes to how and when mining happens in northern Ontario.

Targeted health funding geared at First Nations

The federal government says that funding targeted for Aboriginal health research will go to on-the-ground, practical projects that address some of the major health issues facing First Nations people.
The government announced $25 million over 10 years to support research into obesity, tuberculosis, suicide and oral health through the program, called Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples.

Matawa First Nations pledge to put brakes on Ring of Fire

Governments and industry are “running roughshod” over First Nations and ignoring Treaty 9 when it comes to the Ring of Fire, say the First Nations behind an upcoming eviction notice being sent to industry in the region.
Six First Nations plan to issue 30-day eviction notices to all mining companies with exploration and development camps on Matawa First Nations’ traditional territory.

Radio Moose Factory

It’s not exactly pirate radio, but Moose Cree youth are taking over the airways.
The John R. Delaney Youth Center in Moose Factory now features a DJ booth, radio tower and control room for youth and community members to broadcast live over the radio dial.
101.7 FM will soon feature youth programmers spinning tunes, hosting shows and doing live interviews for broadcast through the community.
Jay Montour, the youth center’s manager, said the system currently has the power to reach a 30-kilometer radius around Moose Factory.

Moose Cree investing in youth

A rash of youth suicides has rocked Moose Cree First Nation over the past few months, but a new, stable source of funding for the community’s youth center has given hope that the trend can be reversed.
Moose Cree has been dealing with four youth suicides since the beginning of May. The deaths have shook up a community that has become far too used to seeing young people take their own lives.

Preparing for emergencies in Sachigo Lake

Members from across Sachigo Lake First Nation are now capable of responding to emergencies in the community thanks to a pilot program aiming to build emergency response capacity in remote communities.
Ten participants from organizations in Sachigo Lake participated in the emergency response education intiative from May 7 – 11, learning how to deal with a variety of situations including heart attacks, hypothermia and broken limbs while in the bush.

Neskantaga takes ‘American mining bully’ to court

Neskantaga’s fight to slow down the Ring of Fire and get First Nation consultation over mining was brought to a Toronto mining court on July 5.
In a case with serious implications for the speed at which Ring of Fire development occurs, Neskantaga argued to the Ontario Mining Commissioner that First Nation consultation has to occur before industry can buy and sell land on Neskantaga traditional territory.

Prescription drug abuse funding announced

Health Canada has announced an additional $3.5 million in funding for 2012-2013 to target prescription drug abuse (PDA) in northern Ontario First Nations.
The money follows up on $1.1 million that was earmarked for PDA programming in First Nation communities in 2011-2012.
"Tackling drug abuse is a priority for our government and First Nations, and we are committed to working together with the provinces and territories to address this complex issue," said Health Canada Minister Leona Aglukkaq in a statement.
