It’s not exactly pirate radio, but Moose Cree youth are taking over the airways.
The John R. Delaney Youth Center in Moose Factory now features a DJ booth, radio tower and control room for youth and community members to broadcast live over the radio dial.
101.7 FM will soon feature youth programmers spinning tunes, hosting shows and doing live interviews for broadcast through the community.
Jay Montour, the youth center’s manager, said the system currently has the power to reach a 30-kilometer radius around Moose Factory.
The station is working on updating the equipment so it will reach a 50-kilometer radius, and in the future he would like to see the frequency reach as far as Fort Albany, 140 kilometers north.
Montour said both staff and youth at the center are excited about the new station.
The plan is to have one volunteer at the beginning setting up music playlists and playing songs during the day. In the future Montour plans to train youth from the community to use the equipment so they can host their own shows on the station.
