Anishinabek Nation calls for direct First Nation consultation on new mining act regulations

The Anishinabek Nation is calling out the Ontario government over phase 2 of the new Ontario mining act, saying the government is pushing through changes without directly consulting First Nations.
Ontario had set a May 1 deadline for comments on new regulatory proposals under phase 2 of the mining act. The regulations were posted online on March 12, with stakeholders asked to submit comments and concerns electronically or in written form.

First Nation leaders are threatening to pull support for mining in the Ring of Fire, after Cliffs Resources’ announced it plans to locate its chromite processing plant in Sudbury.
Cliffs announced on May 9 that the mining company will go ahead with the $3.3 billion Ring of Fire project, which includes the chromite mine east of Webequie, a transportation route running south from the mine site to connect to highway 17 near Aroland, and a ferrochrome processing plant in Sudbury.

Medical researchers in Thunder Bay are leading a national push to create a vaccine for a rare bacterial infection that seems to affect First Nations people more than non-Aboriginal Canadians.
The urgent work on a vaccine comes as the number of people admitted to hospitals with severe diseases related to Type A Haemophilus influenzae continues to include a large percentage of First Nations people from northwestern Ontario.

East-West Ring of Fire corridor in jeopardy

Noront Resources says it will work with Cliffs Resources and the Ontario government on building a north-south transportation route to the Ring of Fire.
The announcement, made by Noront President and CEO Wes Hanson during a speech to a New York mining investment seminar, casts doubt on the possibility of an east-west road corridor connecting the Ring of Fire and four Mattawa First Nations to Pickle Lake.
Noront was the main industry proponent of an east-west corridor.

Regulate mining industry or expect more conflict, say leaders

First Nation leaders are criticizing the Ontario government’s new mining act, saying it puts too much faith in industry to “do the right thing” without adequate monitoring or regulations ensure meaningful consultation happens.
In a six-page letter to the Minister of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM), Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) pointed out a range of flaws with phase two regulations, including concerns over the lack of compliance monitoring and enforcement.

Golf tournament a tool for healing

Organizers of the second annual Raising Awareness Together golf tournament were overwhelmed by the positive turnout the event got last year.
But they have not let success slow them down. Almost immediately after last year’s tournament, planning was underway for this year’s event.
After all, the organizers know that their efforts are aimed much higher than just hosting a successful golf tournament.
