Regulate mining industry or expect more conflict, First Nations tell Ontario

First Nation leaders are criticizing the Ontario government’s new Mining Act, saying it puts too much faith in industry to “do the right thing” without adequate monitoring or regulations to ensure meaningful consultation happens.
In a six-page letter to the Minister of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM), Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) pointed out a range of flaws with phase two regulations, including concerns over the lack of compliance monitoring and enforcement.

Building community through youth dance

When Lance Geyshick was 12, he had to petition his elementary school’s principal to be allowed to dance in a high school program new to his community of Lac La Croix.
Four years later, Geyshick, 16, has just finished his fourth solo dance performance at a major Toronto showcase event hosted by the national dance program Outside Looking In (OLI).
Geyshick was joined at the 2012 Toronto showcase by 14 other youth from Lac La Croix, the Treaty #3 community that has helped put OLI on the map.

Webequie signs provincial Ring of Fire agreement

Ontario and Webequie First Nation have agreed to work together on realizing benefits from the Ring of Fire.
Webequie Chief Cornelius Wabasse and Minister of Northern Development and Mines (MNDM) Rick Bartolucci signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) during Bartolucci’s visit to Webequie on June 12.
The agreement commits Ontario to providing social, community and economic development supports for Webequie to help facilitate the community’s involvement in the Ring of Fire.

Neskantaga aims to block Ring of Fire access road

Neskantanga First Nation is stepping up efforts to block Cliffs’ proposed transportation corridor to the Ring of Fire.
The Matawa First Nation has launched a two-pronged attack on the 340-kilometer, all-weather access road that Cliffs wants to run south from the Ring of Fire to Nakina.
With its first move, Neskantaga applied to an obscure Ontario mining court to decide whether the First Nation has rights to the land over which the corridor would be built.

Ring of Fire moving too fast, say chiefs

Development of the Ring of Fire is moving far too fast for First Nations to adequately prepare, say the chiefs of two northern First Nations whose traditional lands overlap the proposed mining area.
Both Chief Eli Moonias of Marten Falls First Nation and Chief Cornelius Wabasse of Webequie First Nation say they are not against development, and they both want to ensure that First Nations benefit from any mining projects that do go ahead in their area.

Pooling resources to deal with NAN-wide housing needs

First Nations across northern Ontario are being trapped in a cycle of high debt loads that leave them unable to deal with massive housing needs, says a Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) deputy grand chief who believes he has a solution to the problem.
Les Louttit, NAN deputy grand chief, told Wawatay News that NAN communities have to pool their resources, prioritize housing needs across the North and create a NAN-owned and operated housing organization in order to move forward on the dire needs facing the communities.

Celebrating coaches

The community of Garden River is celebrating Jordan Nolan’s Stanley Cup victory, and rightfully so. Winning the Stanley Cup is a big deal. Being a 22-year-old Ojibwa man and doing so is even bigger. Jordan’s success is a testament not only to the ability that First Nations youth have, but also to all the hard work that his parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles and the entire community put into raising him.

Governments and industry are “running roughshod” over First Nations and ignoring Treaty 9 when it comes to the Ring of Fire, say the First Nations behind an upcoming eviction notice being sent to industry in the region.
Six First Nations plan to issue 30-day eviction notices to all mining companies with exploration and development camps on Matawa First Nations’ traditional territory.

Beardy elected Ontario regional chief

Stan Beardy has been elected Ontario’s regional chief.
Beardy beat incumbent Regional Chief Angus Toulouse, of Sagamok Anishinawbek First Nation, in the second round of voting on June 28, earning 59 votes compared to Toulouse’s 53.
The third candidate, Joseph Gilbert of Walpole Island First Nation, was out after the first round of voting.
Beardy has been Grand Chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) for the past 12 years, winning four straight terms.

Beautifying Marten Falls

Three years into a community beautification project, Marten Falls First Nation is looking better than ever.
The program that started with litter cleanup and brush cutting between houses has now expanded to clearing much of the thick brush along the Albany River banks, opening up a view of the spectacular river from the community.
Marten Falls’ councillor Grace Baxter-Bottle, who initiated the program three years ago, said the idea is to encourage community members to take care of the community.
