The Canadian Red Cross continues to bring in much-needed supplies into Attawapiskat, which declared a state of emergency due to a housing crisis in late-October.
The emergency relief organization will be bringing new wood stoves to replace old ones used by a number of community members. The wood stoves add to long list of needed supplies brought into the community, which includes sleeping bags, heaters, generators, First Aid kits, crank flashlights, fire extinguishers, and industrial laundry equipment, among others.
The Canadian Red Cross raised $300,000 in donations by Dec. 9, most of which went to purchasing the supplies directly for the community, a Red Cross spokesperson said. The Red Cross was the first outside organization to respond to the housing crisis, as it began to provide emergency relief in late-November.
