The 3rd Annual Walk for Good Life is scheduled for Aug. 1-8, beginning in Eagle Lake and completing a full circle through Couchiching, Rainy River First Nation, Onigaming and Northwest Angle #37.
“The First Nation communities welcome the walkers with gatherings and meals and it’s a great feeling for the participants to be honoured this way,” said Teresa Hazel, CEO of Oshki Aa-yaa’aag Mino Bimaadiziiwin (Good Life For Young People).
The 7-day, 500-kilometre trek provides an opportunity for Aboriginal youth to walk and learn together with their Elders and youth from other Treaty #3 communities.
Singer/songwriters Larissa Desrosiers, Oshki Aa-yaa’aag Mino Bimaadiziiwin’s youth coordinator, and Jeremy Jordan (Mack Sickz) will be participating in the walk and performing at community gatherings to share their stories and dreams for a good life.
While the walkers do the majority of the walk, community members are encouraged to come out and join in the walk for a mile or two along the way to give the walkers a much-needed break.
Contact Hazel or Desrosiers at 807.274.4088 or hazelteresa@hotmail.com to register for the walk or to obtain sponsorship opportunities or more information.
