Michipicoten First Nation has been flooded after a record rainfall hit the Lake Superior region near Wawa, about 224 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, on the evening of Oct. 25.
The First Nation has declared a state of emergency due to flooding.
The municipality of Wawa also declared a state of emergency on the morning of Oct. 26 after the storm damaged the basement of the hospital, backed up some drains with debris and washed out roads surrounding the community.
Ontario Provincial Police closed Highway 17 about 15 kilometres north of Wawa on the evening of Oct. 25 due to an overflowing river.
