Fontaine recognized for lifetime achievements

Former Assembly of First Nations national chief Phil Fontaine is being recognized for his lifelong dedication to the Aboriginal community.
The Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business and Sodexo Canada plans to present Fontaine with the Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations at CCAB’s 11th annual Vancouver Gala on Sept. 23.
The Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations is presented to a Canadian who has personally contributed, through his or her professional and voluntary commitments, to building bridges between Aboriginal people and Canada’s business community.

Regional Chief urges feds to dialogue

Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy is calling on the government to suspend its funding cuts and sit down to dialogue.
In advance of the Oct. 12 official visit to Canada from UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Chiefs of Ontario are expressing their opposition to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) funding reductions.
INAC announced changes to 2013-2014 funding agreements including reductions for Provincial and Territorial Aboriginal Organizations.

Communities selected to participate in provincial energy conservaton program

A new program will bring together 12 First Nation communities who will participate in the saveONenergy Aboriginal Conservation Program, the first of its kind in Ontario.
This program provides customized conservation services to help First Nation communities, including remote and northern communities, reduce their electricity consumption and improve home comfort.
Communities include Keewayin, Wunnimin Lake, Moose Cree, Pic River, Michipicoten, Munsee-Delaware, Beausoleil, Walpole Island, Saugeen, Nawash, Thessalon and Nipissing.

DFC high school seniors offer advice to new students

Starleen Meekis is from Deer Lake is in her last her of high school and plans to attend college next year. She is excited to meet new people and about getting her education and diploma this year. Star is a new student activity planner. She already has plans to engage her fellow students in fun activities like paintball and laser tag.
“DFC is like a second home,” she said. “We watch over one another and we take care of each other. We never leave a person alone.”

Manitoba nation signs historic self-government agreement

The Government of Canada, the Government of Manitoba and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation signed the first-ever self-government agreements last week.
Once in effect, the agreements remove Sioux Valley Dakota Nation from under portions of the Indian Act by providing them with greater control over decisions related to economic development, land management, education, housing and water, among other important issues, and by providing the mechanisms for good governance.

Métis seek to modify hunting rights

Ten years to the month after the Supreme Court of Canada released its landmark decision on Métis harvesting rights in R. v. Powley, Alberta Métis are asking the high court to once again turn its attention to the issue of Métis harvesting rights.
This time the test case R. v. Hirsekorn is about how to apply the Supreme Court’s test in Powley to the descendants of the well-known Métis buffalo hunters of the plains.

Treaty 3 names new police chief

A former detachment commander at Sioux Lookout is the new head of Treaty Three Police Service.
Dan Davidson will take over the police service in early October. He also served as the head of major crimes for the northwest. Davidson succeeds Conrad DeLaronde, who resigned his position last month amidst problems with labour relations.
The interim Chief of Police will begin working for Treaty Three Police in a secondment position from the Ontario Provincial Police
commencing on Oct. 7.
