WWT: What are the biggest issues facing NAN communities?
Six youth from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug are currently on an Ontario tour, showing the film 3rd World Canada about suicide in the community and talking to audiences about living conditions in a remote First Nation.
Elton Beardy is one of the youth on the tour. Before he left for the kickoff event in Toronto, Wawatay sat down with Beardy to talk about the tour and his message for the people of Ontario.
Bacon wrapped venison
Portion size 3-4
2 lbs venison tenderloins (a single deer loin or Moose or Elk or Pork or Beef)
1/2 lb bacon (Plain, thin-sliced Bacon is best)
3 cups dark brown sugar
2 cups soy sauce (Regular NOT low-sodium. You’ll want the saltiness)
1/4 cup white sugar (Optional for added Sweetness)
Directions:
-Mix brown Sugar and Soy sauce together in a bowl. They should combine nicely into a soupy soy liquid.
More than 100 people, including Lac Seul Chief Clifford Bull, attended a Dec. 21 Idle No More rally in Sioux Lookout, which was accompanied by prayers, traditional drumming and the Round Dance.

Fort Severn house fire under investigation
One woman has died after an early morning fire burned down a home in Fort Severn First Nation on March 31.
Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) began an investigation at the Fort Severn Detachment following the report of a residential fire. Police confirmed that several occupants escaped the fire and that one individual was unaccounted for.
Police confirmed that one body was recovered from the residence and a post-mortem examination was conducted on April 3 in Kenora.
Greenpeace is citing two endangered sections of the boreal forest in northern Ontario as needing immediate, long-term protection.
In a new report highlighting five areas of Canada’s boreal forest under threat, the environmental organization points to northern Ontario’s Trout Lake-Caribou forest near Sioux Lookout and the Ogoki forest surrounding Marten Falls as in imminent danger from logging leases.
Ghislain Picard has been re-elected as the chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador for an eighth straight term.
Chief Picard, an Innu from the community of Pessamit, won election for another three year term on Jan. 30 in Quebec City.
The win means Picard will also serve as regional representative on the AFN National Executive.
Respected Elder Peter Barkman of Sachigo Lake passed away on Jan. 31.
Barkman was serving as an Elder member of the Wawatay Board of Directors as well as a member of the Elders Council for the Sioux Lookout Health Centre at the time of his passing.
Throughout his life Barkman provided guidance, direction, support and advocacy to various First Nations organizations in Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory.
