Seven sacred teachings cards introduced

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

Thunder Bay Police Const. John Walmark and artist Patrick Cheechoo have created a set of seven sacred teachings flash cards to educate youth about their culture.
“We need to create understanding and what better way than to start with the young and start with something that engages them and they love to do,” Walmark said during the June 19 launch of the cards. “They can colour the image on the front and they can learn about the teachings (on the back) and go through them with their parents.”

Diabetes leads to vision loss for NLIP student

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

Native Language Instructors Program fourth-year student Martin Tuesday is determined to complete his studies even though he has difficulty seeing due to complications from diabetes.
“I’m behind in my work right now but I want to finish the NLIP,” Tuesday said. “It’s very hard for me in class right now because I can’t see as a result of my diabetes. I can’t see with my left eye and part of my right eye.”
Tuesday first developed diabetes about 27 years ago, but after following a traditional healer’s treatment, he overcame the disease.

KI chief to attend National Treaty Gathering

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

KI Chief Donny Morris is looking to learn more about a national treaty alliance concept at the upcoming Onion Lake National Treaty Gathering.
“I’m on a fact finding mission to see if the community would fit in, if it’s a viable option,” Morris said on July 10 about the July 14-18 gathering. “We like to toe our own line, but I know joining an organization that’s going to be seeing, speaking and doing things our way, I know I’m going to need that support.”

Treaty Three Police fate not decided

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

The Treaty Three Police Service board executive has announced that it does not intend to close down the police service.
“It is not nor ever will be the desire of the board of directors, executive or our member-representative communities to close our police service,” said the executive in a July 10 press release. “In addition, we want to make it equally clear that our deficit was not attributed to financial mismanagement or irresponsible spending of funds, as clearly stated in a recent financial audit.”

First Nations royalty tax regime called for

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

Deputy Grand Chief Les Louttit is calling for a “First Nations royalty tax regime” for all developments within Treaty 9 and 5 territories.
“We don’t want to be at the local First Nation negotiating or tribal council-level negotiating table,” Louttit said. “(Nishnawbe Aski Nation is looking for) a resource revenue and benefits sharing agreement with Ontario, which would include mining, forestry, hydro or tourism — that’s where NAN’s role is.”

Studying Anishinabemowin on the land

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

A visit to check out the Legend of Green Mantle at Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park was one of the highlights in William Esquega’s Anishinabemowin language course.
“We touched base on that even though it was summertime — I don’t like to do any legends during the summer,” said the former Confederation College language instructor originally from Sand Point. “We focused more on the story so we were able to do that.”

Top cops resign from Treaty Three Police

Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:23

The top three Treaty Three Police chiefs have resigned.
Chief of Police Conrad DeLaronde’s resignation is effective this coming November, Deputy Chief of Police Larry Indian’s resignation is effective at the end of August and Deputy Chief of Police Terry Armstrong has accepted a position with Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS).
“Armstrong went to NAN; he’s the police chief there now,” said Treaty Three Police Service Board Chairman Eli Mandamin. “We’re dealing with about three signatures, but there’s no crisis, there’s no urgency.”
