Cree politician aims for federal NDP leadership

Quebec MP Romeo Saganash decided to run for leadership of the federal New Democratic Party to continue the path set by former leader Jack Layton.
“I thought to myself, if I’m not going to get there without him, at least I want to continue his walk, his journey towards a better Canada where everyone is included,” said the James Bay Cree federal politician. “I’m looking forward to travelling across the country in this leadership race. The candidates announced so far demonstrate the true quality and strength that we have in the party.”

Achievements recognized at First Nations Women’s Day event

Renee Tookenay’s battle against addictions, both her own and others as well, led to her award at the First Nations Women’s Day 3rd Annual Recognition Dinner.
“For the last 10 years I’ve been trying to help others as well as trying to help myself,” said the Fort William band member during the Oct. 5 award dinner. “Sharing and giving through my experience helps others at the same time as it helps me. We journey together.”

Community gardens a hit in remote First Nations

Fresh lettuce was available for the first time in Wawakapewin this summer.
“We were so excited because so many of our community members were actually able to access lettuce,” said Arlene Meekis, a Lakehead University student and former economic development officer in Wawakapewin. “We are a very remote community with no airstrip. Just depending on floatplane charters, you really have to be careful about what you bring in, so perishables are kind of low on the priority list.”

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug’s garden education project is expanding knowledge of vegetables and other foods in the community.
“I finally know what squash looks like and what it tastes like,” said KI Chief Donny Morris during an Oct. 7 phone interview. “This first year is just a learning process, so hopefully next year other things will come into play, other parties will feel they would like to contribute to the process of us as a community growing our own food and processing it for the community use. That is the whole intent.”

KI, province agree to meet

Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) will be meeting with the Ontario government to discuss God’s Lake Resources Inc.’s mineral exploration activities in the community’s traditional territory.
John Cutfeet, a spokesman for KI, said the province has to explain why the company was granted access into its territory through the government’s permitting process.

First Nations enter security business

Kingfisher Lake Chief James Mamakwa is looking forward to employment and training opportunities from his community’s new partnership: Synterra Security Solutions LP.
“We hope to train our people and get employment for our community members,” Mamakwa said during the Oct. 19 announcement of the security company. “We already have one contract with the Musselwhite Mine … so it’s already started.”

No joint review, no Ring of Fire: Matawa chiefs

The chiefs of Matawa First Nations have withdrawn their support for development in the Ring of Fire. The Oct. 21 announcement comes after the federal government announced plans to conduct an environmental study of a potential mine project in the Ring of Fire, an area in the James Bay lowlands near several Matawa communities.
But Matawa chiefs said they want a more thorough study of the chromite mine proposed by Cliffs Natural Resources, a company based out of Cleveland, Ohio.

Welcome Path video launched to help students’ transition

First Nation students moving to Thunder Bay for their education now have another tool to help them with their transition — the recently-launched Welcome Path video.
“We need more resources like this for our youth coming from First Nation communities,” said Julaine Trudeau, one of the actors in the video who originally moved from Muskrat Dam to attend high school in Thunder Bay. “I know how difficult it is and how much more support needs to be out there for youth who are making that transition.”

Security now First Nations business

A First Nations security company has been formed to provide services for new businesses emerging in First Nations territory across northern Ontario.
Formed as a partnership between Naicatchewenin, Wunnumin Lake, Kingfisher Lake and Canadian Security Management/Canadian Mine Security, Synterra Security Solutions LP signed on its first client this past March: Gold Corp’s Musselwhite Mine.

Oshki student completes course, delivers baby

Pic River’s Michelle Morriseau-Moses brought her newborn baby daughter to her Oct. 14 graduation ceremony at Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Education and Training Institute in Thunder Bay.
The Native Early Child Education valedictorian gave birth shortly after completing the five-semester program, which provides students with the knowledge and skills to organize and maintain a safe, stimulating learning environment for young children.
