Create: 12/01/2015 - 19:36

Kasabonika’s Chris T. Anderson is planning a 15-kilometre swim from his community on Kasabonika Lake to the old settlement July 30.
“I’ve been thinking about this for two years already,” said Anderson, who lost his left arm in 1992. “I swam across the lake last year from Kasab- onika to the mainland to fundraise to broadcast gospel music.”
The swim is a fundraiser for con- struction of a new gospel church, pur- chase of sound and audio equipment and startup of local gospel radio pro- gramming.

Heavy smoke forces Deer Lake evacuation

The Deer Lake evacuation focused the story for a number of national and local media representatives during Nishnawbe Aski Nation’s July 21 media flight into the heart of the forest fire crisis.
“Yesterday was very smoky, but the wind has shifted,” said Deer Lake councillor Cory Meekis shortly after a four-engine Hercules aircraft took off from his community with a load of phase-one evacuees and their luggage. “We couldn’t even see 50 feet in front of us when we were driving.”

Protecting the home front

Sandy Lake Chief Adam Fiddler applauded the efforts of 20 community members who stayed behind with him after the rest of the community was evacuated due to smoke from forest fires.
“If they were not here with me, I would have sunk,” Fiddler said dur- ing a July 28 interview. “It was as if we were in a big canoe – they were the ones paddling and all I was doing was steering. If they were not here with me, we would have gone nowhere, so I really appreciated those 20 people who stayed with me.”
