Faith City Church pastor Roma Fisher is planning a trip to his home community of Long Lake #58 to help people in their battle against prescription drug abuse.
“We’re trying to help them in any way we can ... in the way they want to be served,” Fisher said. “I’m acting more as a resource, connecting them with other services.”
Fisher said his Spirit Alive ministry has been providing Long Lake #58 community members with a spiritual approach to overcoming addictions. They also provide resources to help people on a path to a healthy lifestyle. The community is located about 300 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.
“They want to have a healthy home, healthy lifestyle,” Fisher said of people in his community who have quit prescription drugs. “Now that they are sober, they need programs to have healthy families.”
Fisher and other Faith City Church members have also been helping people from surrounding First Nation communities during their transition to living in Thunder Bay.
“Housing is huge,” Fisher said. “Some of them are running away from the reserve for their addictions. They are coming to the city to find help.”
Fisher spends a lot of time helping young families, driving them around the city to different locations.
“Sometimes we house them for a short time, maybe a couple of days in a hotel,” Fisher said. “We have to hook them up with some other resources.”
Spirit Alive recently celebrated the $7,000 it raised during the Hope Help and Healing local broadcast on Global TV in Thunder Bay at its first annual banquet in Thunder Bay.
Fisher’s Spirit Alive weekly First Nations-focused television ministry broadcasts are also now available on Global Thunder Bay and online at www.spiritalive.org.
The program is also aired on the Miracle Channel every Saturday, VisionTV every Thursday, and on CHEX TV, CKWS TV and Thunder Bay Television on Sundays.
