Any citizens of Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) traveling to Toronto on December 9, 2015, should be aware there will be a citywide taxi and limo strike.
The Hog Town battle is between Toronto city taxicabs and Uber: a personal driver service connected through smart phone apps.
The strike will gum up the streets in protest to Uber’s non-compliance of Toronto’s city bylaws. The taxi and limo driver’s are arguing that Uber is operating without licenses, insurance and are not regulated by city standards.
John Tory, Mayor of Toronto, stated on October 1, 2015 that Uber X is operating “outside the law.”
Taxi and limo’s must carry $2-million of commercial insurance, have accessible taxis, be equipped with in-car cameras, have regulated police background checks, metered pricing and are subject to Toronto by-laws.
The taxi and limos also want fair practices; as Uber not comply with the same regulations charge a near or same rate for the services. Although the taxi and limo drivers do not want to inconvenience their own customers, they're willing to take a loss to ensure fair competition and to protect their livelihood.
For those of you who want to show support for the taxi and limo drivers in Toronto you may call Toronto Mayor John Tory at 426-397-2489 or email him at mayor_tory@toronto.ca.
For NAN citizens that may be traveling to the ‘Big Smoke’ check the TTC subway and bus website at https://www.ttc.ca for alternative means of getting around the city. Or you can text for an Uber!
