The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Attawapiskat caught fire yesterday April 21, 2021. The historic church, which was built in the 1930's, is one of the oldest buildings in the community. It was mostly constructed by the local people using lumber gathered and milled in the community.
As of now there have been no reports of any injuries, and firefighters contained the fire to help prevent the spread of flames and further damage to any other surrounding buildings.
Currently the cause of the fire is unknown.
