Web portal aims at educating youth in mining

An online web portal aimed at helping First Nations youth explore the world of mining was launched on July 25.
Learning2mine.ca is an interactive web portal developed by Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Education & Training Institute that provides information on the mining industry and careers.
Rosie Mosquito, Oshki’s executive director, said the portal was developed with the upcoming mining opportunities within the Ring of Fire in mind as First Nations stand to benefit from such opportunities.

Beaverhouse Chief recounts challenges of adapting to original home

As a young child, Marcia Brown Martell was taken from her home in Beaverhouse First Nation, located near Kirkland Lake, Ontario, to be adopted by a non-Native family in southern Ontario.
Knowing her heritage, Brown Martell said it was a struggle to be raised by and live among non-Native people, especially when she moved with her foster mother to Texas.
“Terribly lonely,” she said about her feelings during those years. “To myself, I was isolated. There weren’t any of my people with me and what I learned about my culture I learned from books.”

Attawapiskat evacuees returning home

Residents of Attawapiskat who were evacuated over the weekend are heading back home after the First Nation lifted its state of emergency on May 19.
More than 1,000 evacuees are expected to return over the next three days from six host communities, including Kirkland Lake, Fort Frances and Wawa in Ontario, and Val d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda and La Sarre in Quebec.
The First Nation declared a state of emergency on May 16 after the breakup of the Attawapiskat River led to rising water levels.
