NAPS busts oxy shipment bound for Marten Falls

Nearly $5,000 of oxycodone pills have been confiscated by Nishnawbe-Aski Police Services (NAPS) at the Thunder Bay International Airport.
The pills were bound for Marten Falls First Nation.
The NAPS Drug Unit was assisted by the NAPS Guns and Gangs Unit and the Ontario Provincial Police Drug Enforcement Section during the bust.
Police seized approximately $4,800 worth of Oxycodone.
Thirty-seven year-old Josie Baxter of Thunder Bay has been charged with Trafficking a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Youth charged with murder in Whitefish Bay shooting

A 16-year-old Whitefish Bay First Nation youth has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of Charles Minshall.
Treaty #3 Police Service and the OPP made the arrest of the youth on July 26. The accused can not be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Minshall, 61, also of Whitefish Bay First Nation, was shot while in the community’s store on July 22.
Police responded to the store after receiving reports of gunfire in the area. Minshall was pronounced dead at the scene.
Minshall lived in a residence attached to the store.

Jury rolls just one part of issue with justice system

In 1977, David Kairys authored a study on the underrepresentation of African-Americans on juries across the United States.
The study examined why, nearly two decades after the start of the civil rights movement in America, African-Americans were still proportionately far less likely to serve on juries than their white peers.
When Kairys was shown the recent Iacobucci report on underrepresentation of First Nations people on Ontario’s jury rolls, released Feb. 26, he noted that the parallels to the work he and others had done in America were striking.

Goodwill tournament celebrates 25 years

The 25th annual Goodwill Hockey tournament capped its milestone year with a tight championship game, and the host team taking home the trophy.
The host Gull Bay Ice Lords won their second-straight Goodwill tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Pic River Sharks, the last team to win the tournament.
Three years ago, Pic River took the title by beating Gull Bay, so the final game at the Fort William First Nation arena on April 28 was extra sweet for Gull Bay.
