New high school approved for Sioux Lookout

The Keewatin Patricia District School Board said it would make a major announcement during a student assembly at the Queen Elizabeth (QE) District High School. Then another snowstorm hit, delaying the long-awaited news.
Finally, on April 2, in a carnival-like atmosphere in the school gymnasium, five QE students took the stage and shared the microphone to tell their peers in dramatic fashion, one word at a time: “We … are … getting … a … new … school!”

All-Native Goodwill tournament grows to record size

A record number of teams participated in the 26th annual All-Native Goodwill Hockey Tournament last weekend in Thunder Bay and Fort William First Nation. The tournament attracted 59 teams from across northern Ontario – the most ever for the event.
Thirty-nine youth teams competed in four divisions – Novice (for players eight years old and under), Atom, Peewee and Bantam (up to 14 years old).
A men’s division featured 21 teams playing for $21,000 in cash prizes.

Beardy hired as junior hockey GM & coach

Dean Beardy of Sachigo Lake First Nation wrote on his K-Net web page that he would need a three-piece suit and a haircut for the Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) player draft.
He might have been kidding but Beardy takes seriously his new job as president, general manager and coach of the Shelburne Red Wings. The Red Wings hired Beardy last month to the lead the tier-two Junior-A team, although he doesn’t start full-time on his one-year contract until July 1. He is taking a leave of absence for that period from his job as Sachigo’s economic development officer.

Martin Aboriginal youth program expands

Community members gathered to learn about the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program (AYEP) coming to Sioux Lookout’s high school were given an assignment.
They included First Nation entrepreneurs and student counsellors; representatives of government youth programs and the Town of Sioux Lookout; staff from Lac Seul Training Centre of Excellence and Confederation College; and business and bank managers.
