Thunder Bay signs Letter of Intent with Matawa First Nations

Officials from the City of Thunder Bay and Matawa First Nations Management announced today City Council’s authorization of a Letter of Intent to move forward with granting Grandview Lodge, a former long-term care facility, to Matawa First Nations Management following a deputation made on August 28.

The City’s surplus facility will be used to establish a Matawa Student Education and Care and Centre. On August 28, City Council Committee of the Whole approved and ratified the granting of the Grandview Lodge building to Matawa.

Motion for resignation of MMIWG Commissioners not passed

A late draft resolution put forth at the 2017 AFN General Assembly for the current Commissioners of the National MMIWG Inquiry to resign was not passed in a vote late Thursday evening.

The Resolution 57 #2 read:

Direct the Assembly of First Nations National Chief to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau to inform him that the current MMIWG National Inquiry Commissioners must be replaced with new Commissioners who will respect MMIWG families and survivors. Be trauma-informed and put families first.

NAN, governments agree to transform health care

The federal government, Ontario and Nishnawbe Aski Nation have signed an agreement which they say will transform the response to urgent health needs in First Nations communities.

The Charter of Relationship Principles Governing Health System Transformation in NAN Territory was announced Monday afternoon in Ottawa.

The announcement was made after representatives of the three parties met to discuss the delivery of health care in the wake of health crises in remote communities, in particular a continuing rash of youth suicides over the last several months.

AFN announces major changes giving First Nations greater financial control

As First Nations leaders, Elders, women and youth from across Canada gathered in Regina, SK today for the opening of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Annual General Assembly, AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde and federal Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, announced that First Nations will have more control of financial resources from one year to the next.

Senator Murray Sinclair to head investigation into Police Services Board

The Ontario Civilian Police Commission has appointed retired Judge and current Senator, the Honourable Murray Sinclair as the independent investigator in this matter.

Senator Sinclair served the justice system in Manitoba for over 25 years. He was the first Aboriginal Judge appointed in Manitoba and Canada’s second.

Thunder Bay Mayor charged with extortion

Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs, his wife and one other person, have been charged with extortion.

Keith and Marisa Hobbs have each been charged with extortion and obstructing justice, an OPP release said. Mary Voss has also been charged with extortion.

The OPP statement said the charges relate to "an investigation of allegations of criminal wrongdoing that include a municipal official and a local resident."
