Ghislain Picard has been re-elected as the chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador for an eighth straight term.
Chief Picard, an Innu from the community of Pessamit, won election for another three year term on Jan. 30 in Quebec City.
The win means Picard will also serve as regional representative on the AFN National Executive.
“Regional Chief Picard has worked to address a number of priority areas at the national level, including advocacy for implementation of the United Nations Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples in guiding all of our work in the protection of First Nation title and rights,” said AFN National Chief Shawn Atleo in a press release. “I look forward to our ongoing efforts to advance the goals and interests of First Nations in Canada and especially those in the Quebec/Labrador region.”
Picard was first elected as chief of the AFNQL for the first time in 1992.
